Brain matter atrophy
Brain matter atrophy. Destructive process in the neurons can be induced by the physiological process of ageing as well as by the disease. Atrophy of the brain matter is characterized by the gradual disintegration of the nervous tissue with the reduced size and weight of the grey matter. The physiological destruction is observed in all people in older age, and it can be only slightly delayed by the medicines. In the case of the atrophy induced by harmful factors or other diseases, the cause of the atrophy must be affected to arrest or to slowdown the neuronal damage.
The atrophy of the brain matter, and, particularly white matter, can be caused by some diseases or age-related changes. Sometimes, the paralysis of a half of the body muscles, the hemiplegia, develops. Same symptoms are observed in in the damage of the front part of the hind legs. The posterior injury is characterized by the change in the sensitivity of half a body (hemianesthesia, hemianopsia and hemiataxia). The matter damage can also condition a complete loss of sensation at one side of the body. Mental disorders are also possible, such as recognition of the familiar objects, purposeful actions and pseudobulbar signs. The pathology progress leads to speech and swallowing disorders and pyramidal symptoms.
