Cerebellar atrophy
Cerebellar atrophy. The dystrophic damages may begin with the cerebellum while the conducting pathways remain uninvolved. Ataxia and change in the muscle tonus come to the fore although the reasons for it and prognosis are similar to the damage of the neurons of hemisphere. The cerebellar atrophy can manifest in the loss of the independency. The damage of the cerebellum is characterized by the combined disorder of the skeletal muscles functioning and balance. Motor disorders induced by the cerebellar pathologies have some specific features. The person loses evenness of the movements of hands and legs, intentional shaking in the end of the movement appears, hand-writing and speech change, the speech becomes chanted.
The atrophy of the cerebellum can be characterized by increasing dizziness, headaches, nausea, vomiting, sleepiness and hearing disorders. The intracranial pressure is high, ophthalmoplegia can develop due to paralysis of the nerves as well as areflexia, enuresis and nystagmus are frequently observed.
